Chapter Ten

Flashlight in hand, Jillian tried to figure out where to start looking. Her head was such a tangle right now, she wasn’t sure she could find her way out of a paper bag, much less locate a stubborn pup with a nose for trouble. “I always use the same route when I take him on his run, and dogs can be creatures of habit. Maybe he was frustrated because I didn’t come today, and followed it on his own.”

“Makes as much sense as anything. Lead the way.” Nic held a flashlight, a bottle of water and Murphy’s leash. Jillian had dog treats and the other flashlight. Together they started down the quiet suburban street, taking turns calling for the dog. At each clump of trees, she’d stop and check the shadows before moving on to the next bush, the next yard, the next block.

The moon was bright above the horizon, creating a silver-tinged landscape that would have been romantic under any other circumstances. Jasmine blew on the breeze, sweetening the evening, despite the fear that gripped her. Poor Murphy. His training was progressing, but with the limited time she had to spend with him, he still wasn’t trustworthy around doors. And Mrs. Rosenberg, bless her heart, wasn’t up to the challenge he presented. If he was hers full-time, she could have had him well under control by now, but her landlord wasn’t budging. Just one more dream that wasn’t going to come true.

Watching Nic as he checked yet another hedge, she sighed. He was another dream that wasn’t going to be realized. The past few weeks, she’d gotten to see the man behind the business suit, and she liked what she saw. His workaholic nature was driven not by blind ambition, but by a desire to do right by his family. She knew he looked up to his father, that he was determined to live up to the trust placed in him. That kind of family loyalty was rare, and she couldn’t help but respect him for it. Even though that same family loyalty could mean the destruction of her little island sanctuary.

“Do you think he would have gone this far?” Nic asked as they crossed yet another deserted street.

“I honestly don’t know. He’s fast, so he could have covered a lot of ground pretty quickly if he wanted to. On the other hand, if he was sniffing every fence post and fire hydrant, it could take him all week just to circle the block.” She huffed to blow her hair out of her face. She hadn’t thought to grab a hair tie when they ran out of the hotel. “If it was daytime, we could ask if anyone had seen him, but as it is...” Her voice trailed off.

“Yeah, this place really does roll up the streets after dark, doesn’t it?”

They hadn’t seen anyone since they’d started their walk. Most of the houses were quiet, the warm glow of porch lights acting as sentries against the night.
